Gardening

We had a great time today with our gardening experience.

It was fun taking a look at the inside of lima bean seeds.

Then we went out into our garden and planted pea seeds for our school, and sunflower seeds to take home. We also got to taste some of the spinach, kale, and beet greens that are ready for harvesting.

It was a beautiful day in the garden!

Bad Kitty Play

We had a great time at the Bad Kitty play! Kitty had to deal with change, solving problems, and being kind to others even when she wasn't very happy. It was silly and funny.

Experimenting with Liquids

We have been experimenting with how liquids move and what they look like and feel like.

Run for the Arts

Run for the Arts paperwork was sent home today. Check your child's backpack for the sponsor page. Please return the paperwork to me no later than Monday, March 28th, and then I will forward it to Coach after I have finalized any class sponsors.

Here is the letter that was with the sponsor page.

Dear Kindergarten Families,

On April 1st, Hayhurst children are going to participate in a fundraising fun-run called “Run for the Arts”. This run is held every year (all over the country) to raise funds for bringing creative art, music, and dance programs to our school.

We certainly want to raise as much money as possible and we would also like to see every child’s efforts recognized. Attached is the sponsor sheet for Run for the Arts. You will notice that I have already donated $21.00 to sponsor each of the children in our class. That gives them 1 sponsor.

As we will be jogging a minimum of 6 laps, if your child finds 11 more sponsors (parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends, neighbors, siblings, pets, etc.) willing to sponsor for $1.00 each, they will be rewarded with a Run for the Arts T-shirt AND will realize that their sponsors and their running efforts benefit everyone at Hayhurst. Of course, you may raise more than this minimum, this is just the point at which your child will earn a T-shirt.

We realize that some of our families are experiencing serious financial hardships and still want these children to feel supported and included. If any of you are able and would like to be a Kindergarten Run For The Arts Sponsor for $21.00, please let me know and each child in our room will gain one more sponsor. You can write a check for this generous donation to “Run For The Arts”.

We would like to see every kindergartner with a beautiful new Run For The Arts T-Shirt that they can proudly wear to symbolize their contributions to the Arts.

Bad Kitty Field Trip

Our field trip to see Bad Kitty at the Newmark Theatre is on Tuesday, March 8th. Please turn in your permission slips and entrance fee as soon as possible.

Trees, Trees, Trees!

Today we had a great presentation about trees from the Talk About Trees program.

We identified that trees must have a wooden trunk and grow to be tall.

We learned that conifer trees keep seeds in cones and broad leaf trees generally keep seeds in fruit.

We also learned what some of the broad leaves look like and that conifer trees have needles instead of leaves.

Tree cookies also give us a lot of information about trees. The rings tell us how old they are, and the distance between the rings show if they had a healthy year or if they needed more of something, like sun, during the growing time that year.

Working with a felt picture we talked about the different things that all trees need and what we might find in the broad leaf tree, and what we might find with a conifer tree. Trees provide a habitat for lots of different animals, and food for animals including people.

Paper is made from trees. We learned about different ways paper are made.

Papyrus is made by weaving and hammering stripped papyrus plant pieces. A paper wasp makes their "paper" nest by chewing wood and spitting it out. The paper that we use is made from paper pulp that is pressed and smashed into paper.

We then were able to make some paper using toilet paper pulp, blue colored paper, water, and glitter.

It was a lot of fun!
